[Concert Report] I SAW GACKT MOTHERFUCKERS!
For those linked from dears , sorry for any ramble. It's not purely a gig report but also a blog.

Well, yesterday was the Attack of the Yellow Fried Chickenz tour in London and, as many of you know, I went.

I'm going to start by saying that Gackt was freaking AMAZING and well worth every penny of the £42 we paid for the tickets. Most of the people around us in the queue had bought their tickets from touts and scalpers on ebay however, and thus had paid somewhere in the region of £100 per ticket. For a standing concert, I felt that was a little excessive, but then most of us were going with the "this is our only chance" mentality.

We arrived about two and a half hours early to find that there were about 300 people ahead of us already queueing. It wasn't that bad though. We made friends with a girl who was there on her own, whose name we didn't discover. She let me have some Kendal Mint Cake, so at least I had fresh minty breath to go into the venue.

We were allowed in promptly. I put my bag in the cloakroom because I had heels in them that I thought would be unsafe in the gig. I'm glad to say that the cloakroom facilities were fantastic and there were no issues for me or the other person I was with.

Unfortunately once inside the wait became rather long and tedious. We were in about the 10th row (we didn't buy any merchandise, deciding to wait until the end and then not bothering) and were rather worried because it seemed like we couldn't see a thing. The wait began to draw on. We had expected a support band of some nature to say that we entered the building at 6:30pm but there was nothing. I'm not sure what time Gackt came on, but by that point the crowd had definitely had enough waiting.

About fifteen minutes before Gackt came on there was a message from 'Gackt's secretary' basically reading out the rules of the show. It was done pretty awesomely in my opinion and made me laugh. A lot of it seemed like jibes at Gackt himself (no smoking, you should all quit//no passing out, you'll have to commit hanakiri). The audience is supposed to reply 'osu' but the majority of people around me had NO IDEA what that meant and made up their own responses. A lot of the chants throughout the night took on this, almost embarrassing, trait in which the fans had no idea what they were meant to be screaming so just made NOISE.

Pushing wasn't an issue where I was (on You's side of the stage) and we were mostly unbothered by the majority of pushing. I wasn't hit or anything and the only problem we had was a bit of inappropriate touching of my girlfriend by someone behind her. I actually had a lot of space in which to move about and was only pushed hard when Gackt first came onto the stage and when Gackt threw his shirt into the crowd and everyone moved to try to catch it.

The concert started with ZAN. I'm not going into set list, that's been done everywhere, but it was a good opening number. Really stoked up the crowd. In fact, the first half of the concert was, musically, far superior to the second half. A lot of the numbers were instantly recognisable to the old fans and even if they weren't, they were fast paced enough that we could at least have fun dancing/listening/moshing/jumping to them. The concert then slowed and I was expecting it to be picked up with some more older music. Unfortunately, despite still being awesome, everything lost momentum from there.

Gackt and his promoters probably didn't take into account that there were people there who were fans of him, perhaps in 2005 but who might not be up to date with recent stuff. As it was his first concert, I think a lot of fans were there 'for old time's sake' and expected him to play more of a 'greatest hits' style concert, performing things that we haven't seen live before. In this, Gackt disappointed. Although there were many of the older hits, there were embarrassing moments when Gackt opened the mic to the audience and no one knew the words. The reaction wouldn't have been the same if he had performed Vanilla, Mizerable, Secret Garden, Metamophoze, Last Song... the list goes on.

Also singing Mind Forest in English was a nice touch, but mostly made it incomprehensible. My girlfriend who is Japanese couldn't understand a word of it when I asked her what language it was in, and unfortunately I couldn't either. I sang along in Japanese. I assume that others could understand the words but from where I was it was just a melody. Unfortunate, because it definitely got the crowd going.

Gackt did do an encore and, despite shouts of Vanilla, it was not performed. The rumour of 'you haven't to shout for it if you want it' slightly disproved by the fact we were chanting and it didn't happen. Even so, we all seemed happy by the closing number. Gackt was given a Union Jack flag which made me laugh as it had "Gackt! You are my father! Pay my Mum maintenance!" on it. I would love to see his face when he translates that. Also his "OMG you guys are retarded" face when his band members couldn't get the flag the right way up was adorable.

Lots of stuff was thrown into the crowd throughout the concert. I know that most of the band threw in their ties, Gackt threw his shirt and numerous water bottles. Everyone threw their towels in as well as a few picks and bits of merchandises from the band. I managed to get Chirolyn's pick, which I clenched tightly in my fist and held to my chest to stop anyone from getting. I'm glad to say no one tried to get it from me. I'm glad I managed to get something from my favourite GacktJOB member.

Gackt and GacktJOB were electric. They seemed to really have a good time despite the small venue and they seemed to get really emotional at times. It felt intimate. And best of all...

He promised to come back.

Nree~! Sounds like you had a great time! <3 Thanks for the report. I wish he would come to the States.
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 07:39 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that he will do a US tour at some point. He certainly went down well in London, and I guess he'll use that to gauge his audience in the States. Although he'll probably only do select venues even then.
kel_fishkel_fish on July 17th, 2010 08:01 pm (UTC)
I'm glad the concert was fantastic and you got to have so much fun after waiting for so long. And hey! It's great to make friends that you will forever call, "That one girl," or "Guy who held our place in line when we went to buy coffee because it was too fucking late and too fucking cold and dumbass Kevin forgot to pack blankets." Hee!

Oh, and just in case they got buried in your flist, I posted your b-day story (to keldjinfae_moon and a simple b-day post (to my journal).

I'll check it out! I have no time and everyone is trying to talk to me right now! Agh! This is what happens when you go away for a week!

Haha... how far along in the concert did he promise to come back? You guys might've scared him off.
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 07:41 pm (UTC)
At the end. It is probably a lie, but still... It gives a small amount of hope to those who couldn't get tickets.

Thanks for the report!
Sounds like a great gig in the end =]
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 07:44 pm (UTC)
It was. I never realised how much of a fan I was until I saw him live.

YOUR ICON! NOM NOM NOM

Although Chacha with his top off looks like he needs a good meal!
Elisa *hideko*fuxxtothefuture on July 19th, 2010 07:48 pm (UTC)
Ah he's been always so skinny, and I think that now he has put some (muscle) weight XD
Some people say he is anorexic but I don't think so... there are some lucky ones that are naturally skinny!
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 08:01 pm (UTC)
They say that about all the idols though. I don't think Chacha looked tired in the end though (well, tireder than you would be) so I think it's just natural. He wasn't swooning a little like Gackt was.
sora_de on July 18th, 2010 12:05 am (UTC)
He seriously better come back. <3
I thought I was reading Kendal Mint Cake wrong at first XD; i'm from kendal so it's weird seeing someone mention it on LJ XD;
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 07:45 pm (UTC)
I grew up in Kendal. Kirkbie or Queenie?
sora_de on July 19th, 2010 07:49 pm (UTC)
Oh wow XD Queenie~
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 08:03 pm (UTC)
BACK VILE HEATHEN!!!!

I'm from Kirkbie :P

Well I was. I live in Birmingham now though.
sora_de on July 19th, 2010 08:31 pm (UTC)
Ahh haha.. I see.. XD;

Well you're the first ex-Kendalian I've met on LJ~
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 08:32 pm (UTC)
We're a rare breed. We should stick together.
sora_de on July 19th, 2010 08:34 pm (UTC)
We are indeed. And I can say that not a single one of my friends in Kendal would come to the Gackt concert with me.
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 09:00 pm (UTC)
I'm sure there are some Gackt fans amongst the sheep though. When it doubt, turn to the population of sheep around Kendal for company.

Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 09:19 pm (UTC)
Can you even IMAGINE a sheep at a Gackt concert?

Then again, all the Japanese people I've met have always had a soft spot for sheep. Maybe he'd like it?
sora_de on July 19th, 2010 09:27 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I've noticed that too... I meet so many japanese tourists at work... they really do have a thing about them... or at least, they seem to think that it's us who has a thing about them XD
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 09:45 pm (UTC)
Thats it. If I get another opportunity to see Gackt I'm putting a sheep in the gift bin with a tag saying "Love from your Kendalian fans."
sora_de on July 19th, 2010 10:06 pm (UTC)
YES!!

You're welcome ^^

great report...makes me wish I was here for the European tour...LOL at the mic to the audience who didn't know the lyrics.
But don't be so disappointed because the setlist is the exact same as the Japanese tour so that's probably why they played his "new" songs..it was the same for Ever or last year during the RnRII..nobody did know the songs until the singles came out.
Hope I'll be there the next time he'll come to Europe and not here in Japan.
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 07:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I know. I did know the YFC line-up as well, which helped. Even so, I was hoping that he'd have thrown something out there for the English/Western fans beyond one translated song. Don't get me wrong, the concert was still amazing and I know that a lot of the songs don't fit the YFC 'theme'. Still... My sentimentalism means I'll always love those first few songs I heard of Gackt's over his newer music.

sounds like an awesome concert! I'm not as much of a fan as gackt as I used to be when I was younger, but i can still imagine he'd give a fantastic live performance!
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 07:51 pm (UTC)
He sounded absolutely FANTASTIC. Seriously. I stopped really paying attention to Gackt some time around 2007 (and was only die hard about 7 years ago now) and only recently picked him up again. Even so, I really enjoyed the concert. He was far more charismatic (and taller!) than I had ever imagined he would be.

Seriously, that man owned the stage and even with some of the more embarrassing hiccups (no one knowing the words for instance) he just carried on and didn't seem to blame the fans. He looked moved to tears at some points.
霊気: mitsuhidebitrswtsymphony on July 19th, 2010 05:38 am (UTC)
ha, Everyone promises to come back. That's a staple line.

Cool recounting, thanks for sharing it.

he concert then slowed and I was expecting it to be picked up with some more older music.

The reaction wouldn't have been the same if he had performed Vanilla, Mizerable, Secret Garden, Metamophoze, Last Song... the list goes on.

I find this such a weird thing to say.

Why would he restructure his YFC tour just because he's in another country? GACKT doesn't structure his concerts according to such conventions. No, there's a certain image, a certain feel, ect that goes into constructing his set lists, Visual Live or not.

I personally think it would had been a major cop out if it turned into some 'greatest hits' thing. That's not the structure nor concept of the YFC tour.

Still, why would new songs slow momentum? It shouldn't matter if it's new or not, it's the quality and placement of the various types of songs that goes a long way in determining momentum.

To each his own, I suppose. That's unfortunate though that that's how it came across for you, not matter how much it doesn't make sense to me.

Pretty cool that no one battle you over the pic you caught.
Casis Soda: Cakecasissoda on July 19th, 2010 07:01 pm (UTC)
All good artists take in consideration their audience and adjust their shows for the greatest enjoyment of the crowd, duh~

He's entertaining us not the otherway round =P The unfortunate fact was, his new shit DID slow the momentum. At one point it was so low tension in the live house it was quite painful ^^;/
Kategrownupneko on July 19th, 2010 07:59 pm (UTC)
Everyone promises to come back, and I'm not sure I believe he will, but still, it was a sweet thing to say. As well as his line about his fans from all around the world being his family.

I think I explained why myself and some other fans expected him to restructure YFC for a Western audience. Simply put, we are NOT his target audience. His target are Japanese and we are not, even if we like Japanese music.

If Gackt doesn't think about his audience, he will lose that audience. Even the most famous of musicians have to judge the crowd and adapt their shows accordingly. If a group of fans are unhappy, they will not come again. Now I'm not saying I was unhappy, but I'm saying that there was a definite poor choice of songs in the second half which led to some fans not knowing the songs.

Even one of my friends, who had heard 3 Gackt songs before she came (those being Vanilla, Last Song and 12gatsu no Love Song, none of which were played) was bewildered by the song choices for the second half which seemed to cool the concert and the audience from the frenzy they had been worked into.

YFC simply was the wrong tour to bring for me and quite a few of the people I talked to. This doesn't mean we didn't enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but we felt that as it was our possibly only opportunity to see Gackt, we'd have preferred to see some of the hits that made him famous than his newer stuff.
霊気: calm before the stormbitrswtsymphony on July 20th, 2010 03:26 am (UTC)
Oh i wasn't trying to say you didn't enjoy it (i mean, it says up there that you did), I will apologize if it came off that way, that wasn't the intent.

It looks like we'll have to agree to absolutely disagree here. :)

It was something different to hear a real, reasoned different point of view, however.

mind forest english?
Oh my gosh, im so glad to hear that mind forest was incomprehensible! just because i found out after the show and iv been feeling so awfully ashamed that i didnt notice!

I like what you've said about fans going for old times sake, i am indeed one of those fans! Been feeling alittle embarassed as i didnt know the words so couldnt join in, and because i think one of the girls next to me did infact realise i was shouting out random things, cus i wasnt sure what everyone else was shouting!! XDDDDD i was too on yuus side, i was the girl with the strange blue gems under my eyes. Im so glad someone understands!!! XDD
